Senior Design Engineer – Shell & Tube Heat Exchangers

Roles and Responsibilities for Senior Design Engineer
As part of our strategic growth we are seeking to recruit a “hands on” experienced and knowledgable Senior Design Engineer who can lead our mechanical design function. Reporting directly to the Technical Director, the Senior Design Engineer will play a leading role within our engineering design function, delivering bespoke shell and tube heat exchanger projects for global customers from concept through to manufacture.
This is a senior-level technical position with responsibility for complex mechanical design work, technical governance, and supporting the development of other engineers within the team. The successful candidate will lead by example, combining strong engineering judgement with the ability to guide, mentor and support colleagues.
The role involves detailed mechanical design of shell and tube heat exchangers, including preparation of engineering drawings and performance of mechanical design calculations.
In addition to hands-on design work, the Senior Design Engineer will contribute to strengthening engineering capability within the business, supporting the development of less experienced engineers and helping maintain consistent application of design codes and best practice.
A list of the responsibilities are as follows;
- Lead the detailed design of bespoke shell and tube heat exchangers
- Produce and review engineering drawings using Autodesk Inventor
- Perform and validate engineering calculations using PV Elite
- Ensure compliance with relevant codes and standards (ASME, PD 5500, EN 13445)
- Provide technical input from enquiry stage through to manufacture and delivery
- Review engineering outputs including drawings, calculations and technical documentation
- Work closely with manufacturing, supply chain, customers and inspection bodies
- Support continuous improvement in engineering methods, tools and processes
- Mentor and support junior and developing engineers within the team
- Contribute to maintaining engineering standards and technical excellence
Minimum Competency / Qualifications / Experience on Recruitment
- Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline
- Significant experience in the design and manufacture of shell and tube heat exchangers and pressure vessels.
- Strong working knowledge of relevant design codes and standards, including some of: ASME Section VIII Div 1 & 2, PD 5500, EN 13445, PED, TEMA
- Experience leading engineering teams and managing design activities.
- Thorough understanding of pressure equipment design, materials selection and manufacturing processes.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively across engineering, production and commercial functions.
Desirable Skills/Attributes:
- Chartered Engineer status or working towards achieving the same
- Experience within the process, petrochemical, energy, chemical or related industries.
- Familiarity with FEA, specialist design software and pressure vessel calculation packages.
- Additional experience in pressure vessels and crossflow heat exchangers

Our preference is for candidates to be located within a 30 minute drive of our headquarters in Bradford, BD10 8SW.
We are only interested in candidates with a proven track record of generating designs for shell and tube heat exchangers (and/or) pressure vessels.
