Welding Team Leader

We have an amazing opportunity for a Welding team leader to join our existing team. If you are a Coded Welder with experience in managing and leading a team of welders then please read on;

  • We offer a 38 hour, four day working week (Mon-Thurs 7.30 am to 5.30 pm)
  • We offer regular overtime – as and when needed by the company
  • Training and qualification programmes are fully supported for each welder
  • Welders are encouraged to train in other methodologies (Orbital, semi-automatic)
  • The work is varied in terms of materials, thicknesses, join types and welding styles
  • We provide training in Lean and other forward thinking methodologies
  • We offer a competitive package of hours, wages and overtime

Roles and Responsibilities for Welding Team Leader

As part of our strategic growth we are seeking to recruit a “hands on” experienced and coded welder who can lead and develop our team of welders. The individual we are looking for will be skilled, motivated, career focused and ambitious. Reporting to the Technical Director, the role will involve the following responsibilities;

  • Managing welding operations and performing coded welds
  • Forming & maintaining professional working relationships with people at all levels within the business.
  • Establishing schedules for welding operations and NDT etc.
  • Assigning welding operations to individual welders
  • Managing resources, consumables and welding equipment
  • Developing training programmes for new welders and existing welder qualifications.
  • Ensuring that all welding operations meet the expected levels of safety, performance and appearance.
  • Working with visitors (clients, inspectors, auditors) and liaising with other departments within the business.
  • Management of Welder Logs to ensure the upkeep of all welding approvals.
  • Working with team members to complete all welding documents.
  • Partaking in planning meetings and toolbox talks regarding welding operations.
  • Partaking in any training required for Crane Safety, Pressure Testing, First Aid etc.
  • Maintaining a clean and safe area for work.
  • Assisting in other general fabrication tasks as deemed necessary by management.
  • Agreement and compliance with all company Processes, Procedures and SHE requirements.

Essential Skills:

All of the skills required of a Coded Welder (details attached) plus the following;

  • Proven ability to lead a team of welders to deliver top quality output.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple tasks as and when the job requires.
  • A good knowledge of the different consumables utilised for different materials.
  • A working knowledge of WPS, PQR and test documentation.
  • A displayed commitment to quality, continuous improvement and upskilling.
  • A strong sense of pride in producing quality work on a consistent basis.

Desirable Skills/Attributes:

  • Additional welding qualifications, skills or experience.
  • Willingness to meet fair requests for overtime, flexible working, travel or working on site (UK and abroad) as necessary.
  • Experience of working in Lean and other modern work methodologies
  • Proven ability to lead and develop welding apprentices and new welding recruits.
  • Experience of interviewing and testing new welding applicants.
  • The ability to display a proven track record of offering contributions and solutions.

Minimum Competency / Qualifications / Experience on Recruitment

  • Apprentice trained welding qualifications and up to date welding certificates
  • Existing Code qualifications to ASME IX or BS EN 15614 etc.
  • Experience of welding pressure vessels and/or shell and tube heat exchangers.

Roles and Responsibilities for Coded Welders

As part of our strategic growth we are seeking to recruit more Coded Welders. The individuals we are looking for stand out easily in the crowd as skilled, motivated, career focused and ambitious. Reporting directly to the Welding Team leader the role will involve the following responsibilities;

  • Performing butt welds, corner joints, fillet welds and partial penetration welds using TIG, SMAW and FCAW processes.
  • Deposit welds that pass viaual inspection and UT/RT standards
  • Forming & maintaining professional working relationships with people at all levels within the business
  • Inspection/approval of joint preparation and set up prior to welding.
  • Welding conformity with allocated WPS or WPQR’s for each task.
  • Timely completing all welding documents (Job Books, Welder Logs etc.)
  • Partaking in planning meetings and toolbox talks regarding welding operations.
  • Reporting defects or issues with the performance of welding operations.
  • Taking ownership and responsibility for the welding equipment and consumables allocated for the welding operations.
  • Partaking in any training required for Crane Safety, Pressure Testing, First Aid etc.
  • Assisting in other general fabrication tasks as deemed necessary by management.
  • Agreement and compliance with all company Processes, Procedures and SHE requirements.

Essential Skills:

  • Relevant welding qualifications with experience in the fabrication/engineering industry is necessary.
  • The ability to read engineering drawings and welding symbols
  • Good English communication skills (written and oral) and good numerical skills
  • Ability to work on your own initiative or as part of a team.
  • Proven ability to lay high quality Tig roots for different joint types.
  • Experience in laying multiple layer fillets and groove welds.
  • The ability to work with different weld preps (single, double, J preps etc.).
  • Proven delivery of pressure sealing welds to X Ray or UT Standards.
  • Experience in a range of different thickness welds from 3mm up to 15 mm and beyond.
  • Experience in low to medium Stainless Steel and Nickel Alloys.
  • Knowledge of typical welding process failures and how to avoid them.
  • A strong sense of pride in producing quality work on a consistent basis.
